MARCO ELIZIO

Marco Elizio de Paiva holds a master's degree in art history from the University of Texas at Austin. He was an adjunct professor at the Plastic Arts Department at the UFMG School of Fine Arts for 30 years, where he was also director. He is the coordinator of the Specialization Course in Art History at PUC-Minas and a scholar of modern art, Brazilian colonial art, pre-Columbian art of the Americas, Baroque art, Russian art, and Islamic art.

THE CONTENT

Class 1.  Norway, birthplace of Edvard Munch. A geographical overview of
Norway. Norwegian prehistoric art. The Viking Age and its art. shapes
of art in the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The Christianization of
Scandinavia. Celto-Germanic Art. The Sutton Hoo treasure.

Lesson 2. Anglo-Irish Christian Art. Romanesque and Gothic in Norway. Painting
Nordic Romantic, the background to the work of Edvard Munch. You
nationalist painters. Subjective tendencies in Norwegian art in
second half of the 19th century. Symbolist Tendencies: Melancholy, canvas
painted by Munch in 1892, Norway's first Symbolist painting.
Explanation of Symbolism.


Lesson 3. The Bohemians of Christiania. The influences of the anarchist Hans Jaeger: the
themes from the artist's life. Munch in Paris 1889-1890. The interest in
End of century symbolism; experiments in Art-Nouveau and in the
Impressionism. The first expressionist canvases. Munch's prints.


Lesson 4. Munch and modern expressionism. Intuition and intentional deformation.
Van Gogh's influences. Munch in Berlin: The Scream, 1893. The themes
dramas and the pain of existence.


Class 5.  The Dance of Life, 1899-1900. The Tulla Larsen case. 1901, back to Berlin.
Munch's Norwegian Expressionism. The symbolism of the bridge and the water
in Munch's work. Nietzsche and Munch. Cezanne's influences.

Class 6.  Munch's expressionist self-portraits, an insistence on
expressionism. Nazi persecutions. Some Norwegian artists
contemporaries influenced by Munch's art. The big mural on
Assembly of the University of Oslo. The symbolism of the sun.
